During his tenure, New America broke the 2007 student loan scandal involving improper payments between student loan banks and various financial aid and Education Department officials. Dannenberg's team proffered a series of remedies and student loan program changes subsequently embraced in federal law. He's the former Senior Education Counsel to Senator Edward M. Kennedy for whom he played a lead role in drafting and shepherding toward enactment various key elements of the No Child Left Behind Act. He holds degrees from Yale Law School, Stanford University's School of Education, and Boston University.
